What is HTML?

HTML, or hypertext markup language, is one of the most foundational elements of the internet overall. It allows users to create and structure sections, paragraphs, headings, and links on web pages and applications. It consists of a series of codes types into a text file referred to as tags. It is not a programming language, meaning it does not enable the creation of dynamic functionality. Instead, it is a tool that involves code structures, attributes, and tags to mark up a website page. All web pages are HTML files. Each HTML file is a plain-text file, but with a .html extension rather than .txt, and is made up of HTML tags, or hidden keywords that define how your browser will format and display your content. HTML is powerful and easy to learn.

Hypertext is the method by which you navigate the web by clicking special text called hyperlinks which lead you from page to page. Markup is what HTML tags do to the text within them – mark it as a certain type of text (bold or italicized, for example).

Who needs to learn it?

Learning HTML is important for anyone who owns a business, needs a personal website to showcase their content or resume, or wants to create essentially anything that exists on the internet. Understanding HTML and how it is used to create web pages can be useful for anyone who needs to make a website or blog or simply wants to better understand the internet.

It is becoming more and more of an expectation that people have at least basic HTML skills as education, commerce, and entire workforces become reliant on the internet. Every business needs a website. Beyond that, they need unique, interesting, strategically built websites that can attract new customers and facilitate commerce and connections. The ability to create websites is an extremely useful skill for any job candidate, regardless of industry.
