Agile is a style of project management that focuses on small, concrete tasks and collaboration in order to maximize productivity and minimize delays to the customer. Some companies choose to use a specific style of agile project management, such as Scrum, XP, or lean management, and others choose aspects of several different styles to suit their needs. Agile courses may focus on one over the other, but the overall concept of agile project management is beneficial for companies, regardless of the style they choose.

While many project management styles focus on passing a project from department to department and delivering a large project after months of development, agile project management aims to make smaller, incremental changes while building cooperation across departments. This enables faster development that will meet the needs of internal and external customers sooner.

Why does your company need this training now?

  • More adaptable: Agile project management uses shorter goals, often roughly two weeks at a time, that are created to meet specific requests or needs from users, both internal and external. This means that a last-minute change won’t affect months of work, and project managers can adjust goals as needed. Your team can address immediate needs right away and change the focus of their work quickly if an urgent issue arises.
  • Better collaboration and communication: Because departments already collaborate under agile project management, your team members will naturally learn how to communicate with each other and work together to meet the shorter deadlines that Agile emphasizes. This translates to higher productivity and a more pleasant work environment, which encourages your skilled workers to stay with your business longer.
  • Increased efficiency: Smaller, more specific goals enable team members to determine an accurate timeline for a larger project, while also ensuring that every person knows what task to complete within each project cycle. This means that team members spend less time waiting on a new task and more time completing the work that will build your business and increase revenue.

What is Agile?

Agile refers to a group of software development methodologies that promote disciplined project management processes. Agile allows a team to efficiently manage a project by breaking it into several stages, allowing for collaboration and improvement within each stage. Agile is based on a manifesto that guides teams in implementing and executing their projects. The principles of Agile’s manifesto include:

  • Customer satisfaction
  • Early and continuous delivery
  • Embrace change
  • Frequent delivery
  • Collaboration of businesses
    and developers
  • Motivated individuals
  • Face-to-face conversation
  • Functional products
  • Technical excellence
  • Simplicity
  • Self-organized teams
  • Regulation, reflection, and adjustment

What is Scrum?

Scrum is a subset of Agile. It is a process framework, or set of practices, for Agile development. Scrum helps teams work together by encouraging learning through experiences, self-organization through problems, and reflections on wins and losses and what could be done differently in the future to reach a more desirable result. Scrum involves inspection and adaptation with the goal of enhancing teamworking through the development of leadership philosophy.

The Scrum process begins with the leader creating a product backlog, or a prioritized project list. During the sprint planning phase, the backlog is assessed for complexity and business value. The leader and team then determine which backlog items are added to the sprint. The team then has a specified amount of time (usually two to four weeks) to complete the work of the sprint and meets every day. The leader, called the Scrum Master, keeps the team focused throughout the process.

Who needs to learn it?

Agile and Scrum are very similar project management systems. Agile is more flexible and focused on leadership teams, while Scrum promotes cross-functional teams. Software development groups use Agile and Scrum to manage their workloads through tools, roles, and meetings. Employees in any industry working on complicated projects can benefit from Agile and Scrum, especially if they need to complete a backlog, develop products in accordance with customer preferences, and accomplish project goals. Businesses across all industries need well-managed teams and strong processes for achieving their desired outcomes. Agile/Scrum skills are important for anyone who wants to develop communicative workforces that reach their goals strategically and efficiently.
